Kozhikode: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism,
and Culture will hold a meeting in New Delhi on Friday to hear the
representatives of Ministries of Civil Aviation and Home Affairs on the
security at airports in India.
The meeting, to be chaired by Kanwar Deep Singh, has been called in the wake of the violence between CISF and the AAI’s fire and safety personnel at the Calicut international airport at Karipur on June 10.
It had led to the death of a CISF constable S.S. Yadav, after a shot went off accidentally from the pistol of CISF Sub-Inspector Sitaram Choudhary hitting him on his head.
The airport had to be temporarily closed that night and flights diverted to the Cochin airport. The total loss in the rampage by the CISF personnel had been put at Rs.1.53 crore.
Sources told The Hindu on Thursday that the meeting would primarily discuss a note circulated by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) stating to maintain status quo in the security apparatus at the airports. However, the note also mentioned about upgrading the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for screening of passengers at the airports, framed in 2000.
