New Delhi/Bangalore: When Peter Chang, the regional head for Turkey and Africa at Asus, a Taiwanese maker of laptops and tablets, was offered a possible India posting last year, the 34-year old grabbed it with both hands.
Taking charge of the Indian arm of the Taiwanese tech company in early 2013, Chang, who had worked in mature markets, is busy getting a first-hand feel of the vagaries of the Indian market. "I have worked in Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, but India offers a different kind of challenge.
Unlike those countries, you can't replicate a business model here; each of my 16 branch offices in different states have to be treated differently," says Chang, standing in a noisy street in Ludhiana.
Next week, Chang's travels will take him to the south of the Vindhyas. Down south, in Chennai, sits another young turk ” 33-year-old Mittu Chandilya of AirAsia, arguably the current poster boy for young CEOs in India.
Chandilya is busy setting up a team of executives under the age of 35 for the high-profile venture. His new recruits, Chief Commercial Officer Amisha Sethi and CFO Vijay Gopalan, are both in their early 30s.
"I have a young team because I'm looking at people to create something and not looking at those who have been there, done that," he points out.
Chang and Chandilya are among a clutch of young CEOs, like 33-year-old Avani Saglani Davda of Starbucks and 34-year old Nishant Rao of LinkedIn, who have taken over corner offices in the last few months.
