Bookings fall 8% as airlines hike fares

Mumbai: The steep hike in air fares last week has resulted in drop in bookings with people deferring their travel plans, online travel portals have said.
"We are seeing 7-8% reduction in bookings since last week. Advance bookings have come down but bookings closer to date are not impacted as people have planned engagements and events,'' said Sharat Dhall, chief operating officer of Yatra.com.

According to Dhall the fare hike will result in 5% fall in passenger traffic in September and a drop in fares.
"While air fares on Metro routes have increased by 13% compared to the same period last year, the hike is 91% when compared to July 2013. The dramatic increase and magnitude of the spike has definitely shocked travellers.
There is also a lot more search as people try to book better advance fares. We have witnessed queries-to-booking conversion going down by nearly 15% in September week 1. We expect this to normalize over the next few weeks as passenger get used to the revised air tariffs.
