Huge hike in air fares to Gulf countries

Kochi: Airlines have jacked up fares to the Gulf destinations from Kerala’s three international airports following heavy demand for seats.

Fares have been hiked 60 per cent and more, even three-fold in certain cases. Travel agents say the fare hike has been an annual feature around this time for some years now.
“Usually, there is heavy demand for seats during July-August as schools in the Gulf countries reopen in August and there is a rush of return travel by NRK (non-resident Keralite) families vacationing here,” a travel agent said.
He also pointed out that in May and June every year there would be a rush and fare hike on the opposite side as Malayali families working in the Gulf visit home during their children’s summer vacation.
