New Delhi: In a bid to save India from the embarrassment of an aviation safety system downgrade by the Americans, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has granted a one-year extension to director general of civil aviation (DGCA) Arun Mishra, a West Bengal cadre IAS officer. And, unlike last July when the PMO's order for giving extension to pervious DG Bharat Bhushan was rejected by aviation minister Ajit Singh, Mishra's order was issued in consultation with Singh.
"There was no one to succeed Arun Mishra, as he is the most experienced IAS officer in the field of aviation. No officer in DGCA was considered fit to be made DG in his place. The aviation ministry had sought an extension of Mishra's tenure till September-end but with no successor in sight, Ajit agreed with PMO's view to give him a year's extension," said sources.
Sources close to the minister drew a distinction between Mishra and Bhushan's case. "When the PMO gave an extension to Bharat Bhushan, we had already chosen Mishra as his successor. Now, there being no one to take over from Mishra, we had no objection to him being given an extension," said the source.
