Privatisation plan: Anxious airport staff meet Mulayam Singh Yadav

Lucknow: Employees of Amausi airport on Tuesday sought intervention of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav in the matter related to privatisation of Amausi airport for which technical bids are scheduled to open on October 28. Around five companies are reported to have shown interest in taking over the Lucknow airport. Interestingly, a state act of 1947 bars taking over of Lucknow airport by any private party for commercial purpose and this is what the employees cited in the meeting with Mulayam.

The employees handed over a representation to Mulayam while he was on his way to catch a flight to New Delhi. According to the employees, the post-war state act of March 9, 1947, the Lucknow airport was given to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on the condition that it would not be handed over to any private party for commercial purpose. However, the civil aviation ministry in September went ahead with its plans for privatisation of six airports, including Lucknow. The government has already invited per-qualification bids from private parties for managing the Chennai and Lucknow airports by issuing request for qualification (RFQs).
