From September 1, pilots to take post-flight tests for alcohol

Chennai:  Pilots and cabin crew returning from international flights will have to drop in at their airline's office for a breath analyser test at airports.

Carriers like Jet Airways have already started such tests on their crew at Chennai airport though the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has made post-flight breath analyser test compulsory for all pilots after international flights only from September 1. The move comes after random tests found a few pilots drunk after international flights.

All pilots currently undergo pre-flight screening. Post-flight tests are aimed at those operating for more than 12 hours because it is these pilots who have a tendency to take a drink or two after boarding.

"It is important to take post-flight breath analyser test when it comes into effect because a pilot will be considered as having tested positive if he/she skips the test. It will not be possible to explain the test was missed inadvertently," said a pilot. "Airlines want pilots to report to their offices after an international flight to ensure they do not miss the test," said an airline official.
