Can medium-size aircraft land at Akola: HC to AAI

The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, on Thursday asked the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to explore whether ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport regional), a French-Italian aircraft which usually carries up to 74 passengers, can land at Shivni Airport in Akola.

A division bench comprising Justice Bhushan Gavai and Justice Mridula Bhatkar granted three weeks to the AAI to file its affidavit. The move comes after petitioner's counsel Firdos Mirza orally informed the court that he himself travelled the distance from the proposed airport at Belora near Amravati till Shivni airport and found it to be just 63km.

Mirza said that the present runway at Akola of 1520x45m with basic airstrip of 150m width can handle a small ATR aircraft that carries 60-70 passengers. The lawyer added that a medium-sized aircraft can land at the existing airport and its airstrip could be extended whenever there is a demand.

The court's oral directives came while hearing a plea by Vidarbha Association for Research Technology and Development in Agricultural and Rural Sector (VART-DARS) that knocked judiciary's doors after a Government Resolution (GR) of March 4 last year sought transfer of 60.68 hectares of Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) land for development of the Akola airport.
