Chennai: The fare war initiated by SpiceJet may have landed the airline in trouble, but it has proved to be a blessing for Chennai airport which has recorded a 13.1% increase in domestic passenger traffic till November 2014.
The growth is considered a positive trend for the airport which had experienced a sluggish growth in domestic passenger traffic in previous years. The number of domestic passengers dipped by 4.6% in 2012-13 and increased by 2.3% in 2013-14.
Frequent flash sales announced by airlines throughout the year, low fares from other cities to Chennai, convenient connections to international and domestic destinations and the revival of business travel are considered the reasons for the jump in domestic passenger movement in 2014.
