Panaji: Parking hardships faced by charter operators at Dabolim airport are set to end, with the Navy agreeing in-principle to allow parking of international aircraft at the Goa airport.
The agreement was arrived at in New Delhi during a joint meeting called by Union defence minister and ex-Goa chief minister, Manohar Parrikar, with Union minister for civil aviation, Ashok Gajapathi Raju, and a delegation led by state tourism minister Dilip Parulekar, on Thursday evening.
Charter flights currently fly to airports in Bengaluru and Mumbai to park after dropping their passengers off at Dabolim airport. So acute is the problem that Condor, a German leisure airline which stopped its Goa operations this tourist season citing airport issues among reasons, would fly to Abu Dhabi airport to park. The aircraft would then fly back to Dabolim airport empty to take off with passengers who had finished their charter holiday.
Speaking to TOI from Delhi, Parulekar said the issue will next be discussed at an inter-ministerial meeting for permission from PM Narendra Modi. Managing director of Condor Airlines, Uwe Balser, was a special invitee at the joint meeting which was also attended by representatives of top charter travel agencies such as Sita, Le Passage to India, and Caper Travel.
