Cyclonic weather brought the search for missing Malaysia Airlines passenger jet MH370 to a halt this week, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) announced yesterday.
"Fugro Equator, Fugro Discovery and Fugro Supporter have suspended search operations owing to the effects of two tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean," stated the ATSB weekly update.
Tropical cyclone Eunice and ex-tropical cyclone Diamondra in the southern Indian Ocean forced the Fugro vessels to retreat from the search area.
The ATSB has also released photos and a video of the Fugro vessels battling heavy swell, where wave heights were predicted to reach 12m.
"Under these conditions the vessels are unable to deploy or retrieve the tow fish or AUV equipment due to the safety risks to the crew as well as the risk of damage to the equipment in rough weather," said the ATSB.
