Eight years on, still no transparency in Mumbai Airport slum rehabilitation project

It's been eight years since residents of the slums near Mumbai airport have been awaiting rehabilitation, in accordance to the agreement between Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) and Housing Development Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL).  However, the endless wait and lack of transparency in the rehabilitation project has left residents disillusioned with the program. Prashant Ghagh, 26, a resident of Datta Mandir Road, said, “We have been kept in the dark about the rehabilitation plans for a very long time. Till today, there is no clarity about how the project is taking shape.
All we know is numerous developers come to us with plans and we are confused about the real development plan.”

In 2009, HDIL had constructed 12,000 flats measuring 269sqft each in Premier compound in Kurla (W), which were to be handed over to 25,000 slum-dwellers. However, till date the tenements are laying vacant and gathering dust. Taking up the cause, Santacruz MLA Sanjay Potnis has demanded that the state government look into the matter at the earliest. "The rehabilitation programme has been delayed since September last year and the residents are left in the lurch. If the residents can’t shift into the flats in Kurla, then an alternative arrangement needs to be made for them near Santacruz. There needs to be more transparency in the project,” said Potnis.
