Hubballi: Members of the Airport Land Losers' Forum blocked the road leading to the Hubballi airport for around 15 minutes on Monday, demanding rehabilitation and suitable compensation for their land acquired for the expansion of the airport.
Raghottam Kulkarni, the forum's president, said farmers' land was acquired in 2007, but the government has still not given them their due. "The compensation given by the government is unscientific.
People who had built houses on their sites have been rendered homeless. Now, the government is forcing people out of their land without giving proper compensation."
He demanded that the airport, which is shut for renovation, be reopened only after the farmers are rehabilitated and given suitable compensation.
SA Jahagirdar, vice-president of the forum, alleged that the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), which acquired land for the airport, acted at the behest of some vested interests.
