Chennai: From 2006 to 2014, the number of passengers carried by almost every single private air carrier has tripled or at least quadrupled. But in the one year since Air Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices have dropped - from Rs 186 a barrel to Rs 112 - most airlines have been reluctant to do away with the fuel surcharge that is added to the ticket cost. Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) President D Sudhakara Reddy said, “We laud SpiceJet for doing away with fuel surcharge.
AirAsia has also announced the same. But all others are still levying a fuel surcharge on the tickets. We urge the Ministry to direct airlines to take necessary steps so that passengers don’t have to overpay.”In numbers released by the DGCA, airlines have stated their parameters and records to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). While Air India’s passenger traffic has improved from 70.6 lakh in 2006-07 to 103.6 lakh in 2013-14, private players have surged forward. With the exception of Jet Airways and it’s subsidiary Jet Lite, SpiceJet’s passenger traffic has increased from 25 lakh in 2006-07 to 1.14 crore in 2013-14, Indigo’s(from 9.12 lakh in 2006-07 to 1.80 crore in 2013-14 and Goair’s from 12.63 lakh in 2006-07 to 52.52 lakh in 2013-14.
