Heliservices to be expanded in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: The state government is all set to expand helicopter services as part of its connective infrastructural development programme.

Taking lessons from the 2013 natural disaster when helicopters played a key role in rescuing stranded pilgrims, the Civil Aviation Department has prepared a road map for expanding helicopter services at 60 points in the state.

“Helicopters are no longer perceived as luxury but are a necessity in the mountainous state like ours where accessibility poses a problem during inclement weather. The gulf can only be bridged through the helicopters. We learnt this during the time of crisis in 2013. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide us funds for building helipads as part of the relief package. It will take at least three years to fully implement our plan of starting heliservices from 60 points where helipads will be constructed. However, in anticipation of the Char Dham Yatra, we will be able to start commercial heliservices from Kashipur, Pant Nagar, Haridwar, Haldwani and Dehradun,” said Rakesh Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Civil Aviation.
