Kannur airport site: residents’ woes to be addressed

Kannur: A technical committee with engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the local bodies concerned and another with representatives of political parties will be constituted to examine the alleged property damage by the blasting of laterite rocks at the Kannur airport project site near Mattannur. The decision was taken at a meeting of political party leaders and representatives of the local action committee. Kannur International Airport Ltd.
officials said that local protests were causing recurrent disruption to the construction. The Minister said that a technical committee with PWD engineers, block panchayat Assistant Executive Engineers, and the engineer of the respective local body would be constituted to re-inspect 66 houses that were allegedly damaged by the blasting.

The tahsildar of Iritty taluk will be the convener. The PWD engineers had earlier reported that these houses had not suffered any damage. The committee would submit its report in two weeks, the Minister said.The political committee, with representatives of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) as leaders, would be constituted to examine complaints about compensation.
