Modi not to fly jet fighter at Aero India

New Delhi: The Defence Ministry has denied reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will fly in a French fighter jet at the Aero India show to be held in Bengaluru later this month.

In a statement, the ministry also clarified that the conduct of Aero India had no link with any of the acquisition plans pursued by it.

“The news item is incorrect, misconceived and is not based on facts,” the ministry said on Saturday.

The strong denial came after the Prime Minister's Office expressed surprise over a newspaper report that Modi could be the first Indian prime minister to fly in a fighter jet.

The report had claimed that hectic talks involving were under way between the Ministry of Defence, the Prime Minister’s Office and makers of French Dassault Rafale, which is the major contender for the long-awaited Multi Medium Role Combat Aircraft deal worth over Rs 82,000 crore.
