Mumbai: The developer for the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport will be finalised by March and construction will begin in January next year, officials from City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) revealed at an aviation meet on Wednesday.
The officials expect the first commercial flights from the airport in Panvel in 2019. Once fully developed and operational, it will aim for an annual passenger capacity of 60 million.
The details came as GVK, the operator of Mumbai airport, said that there was no scope for expansion at the Santacruz complex, which is likely to reach its saturation point in 2019. It would be serving 50 million passengers annually by then.
In 2010, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the consortium that includes GVK, had said that the airport would come under a strain by 2015, serving 40 million fliers annually.
Despite different projections, officials and aviation experts say the government should show urgency in developing Panvel airport to ease the burden on Mumbai airport.
