Partial Closure to Hit Functioning of Calicut Airport Hard

Kozhikode: The decision to partially close the Calicut International Airport at Karipur and to impose a total ban on wide-body aircraft on account of the recarpeting of the runway will adversely affect the functioning of the airport, causing trouble to fliers and disrupting the cargo movement.

According to sources, the airport will be partially closed from May 1 to October 31. However, this coincides with the commencement of the busy ‘Gulf season’. Industry experts warn that banning large aircraft from operating from Calicut would result in shortage of seats, leading to skyrocketing of ticket fares during the busiest season of the year from mid-June to September end.

“Runway recarpeting is a process that all airports across the world undertake every now and then. However, the work is usually carried out after careful planning and at regular intervals so as to avoid traffic disruptions. It appears that the authorities have not given any thoughts to these aspects nor conducted any study on how the runway work can be carried out with minimum impact on the functioning of the airport,” said C E Chakkunny, president, Malabar Development Society.
