Question marks over resumption of flights at Malda airport

Malda: There are question marks over the plan of the West Bengal government to resume flight services between Kolkata and Malda because of inadequacy of infrastructure at Malda airport.

According to  AAI Eastern Zone general manager (engineering) RK Joshi Joshi : “The runway is not satisfactory while the boundary wall surrounding the airport is yet to be completed.
The eastern side of the airport area seems to have been encroached. We also need to ascertain whether the airport has the enough vacant land to facilitate smooth landings and takeoffs. We have been informed that there are high-rise structures, mobile towers and chimneys of brick-kilns in the vicinity of the airport. All such issues will have to be taken into consideration.”

On Wednesday, State transport department principal secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay and Airport Authority of India officials inspected Malda airport to assess the likelihood of operating non-scheduled flights.
