Smugglers strike gold when int’l flights turn domestic

Bengaluru: A quarter of the gold smuggled into the country finds its way through international flights that run as domestic flights after they enter Indian skies, Customs authorities have found out.

International flights slated to fly to multiple destinations in the country are converted to domestic flights after they land at the first destination here.

"In many cases detected in recent times, smugglers leave their merchandise at prearranged spots on the aircraft before disembarking. Their associates board the flight for onward journey and collect the merchandise. The gold is left underneath seats or cabin baggage. As domestic fliers are not checked by Customs, they manage to carry the gold out of airports," said a Customs official speaking on condition of anonymity.
