Vijayawada: Vijayawada may have to wait for at least three years to get an international airport. Union civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, who inspected the airport at Gannavaram on Thursday, said it is not possible to upgrade the airport immediately to handle international flights.
"The present airport appears worse than many bus stations in the state. The immediate task is to make it look like an airport. Later, we will upgrade it to an international airport," he said.
He reportedly expressed displeasure with the Krishna district administration for failing to acquire land for the expansion. He told district collector Babu to personally monitor the land acquisition. The minister went through two presentations by officials of Airports Authority of India and GVK international. While AAI officials laid emphasis on expansion of the terminal and runway and improvement in basic facilities, the GVK Group presented designs on an international airport in the city.
