You think Aero India's flying high? Here are some realities

Bangalore: When the gates at the AeroIndia-2015 in Yelahanka airbase open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, it will be a delight for first-timers. But if you are one of those who have participated in previous editions of the biennial aero-show, this one is likely to be a lacklustre affair. Contrary to the grandness of the show in 2011 and 2013, AeroIndia 2015 has almost nothing to much to offer except for the aerobatic teams and the hype generated around PM Narendra Modi's "Make in India" theme.
Neither have the who's who of the global aviation industry participated in the show nor any big business deals struck so far. Here are the reasons why AeroIndia-2015 is just an ordinary event:
While the air shows around the world provide platforms for aviation companies to showcase their latest products, Aero India 2015 has no new aircraft except for the naval version of Indian made Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)—Tejas. The display area is adorned with more or less the same set of aircraft that were lined up even during previous air shows. In fact, according to visitors, there are even less aircraft than earlier shows.
Evidently, the display area was only dotted with US Air Force's Globe Master, Boeing's Stratotanker KC-135, DRDO's Dornier Flying Test Bed, Naval variant of Tejas, Light Combat Helicopter and IAF Hercules. HAL-made Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) were part of the Sarang display team.
Colourful performances by various aerobatics team which attracted visitors at the show was also found to be more or less monotonous. Adding to the woes, collision of two Red Bull aircraft mid-air on Thursday forced the organisers to ground the team.
Looking for business deals worth billions, several top aviation companies set up shop at such shows by displaying various products and technology developed by their R&D firms. But Aero India 2015, despite the tagline of Make in India, seems to have failed to attract big names.
