Nagpur: From take off to landing, it was one thrilling ride for 50 kids from the city as they learnt about flying and principles of flight. In between this journey, many a paper plane and thermocol aircraft were gliding across Raman Science Centre (RSC) during the aeromodelling workshop organized for Nagpur For Kids Club (NFKC) members.
Education officer of the centre, Abhimanyu Bhelave first taught the participants principles of flight and aerodynamics by giving examples of birds, kites and helicopters among other things. This was followed by a session where the kids made their own planes, testing them on the various principles that they had learnt at the workshop. Some of the kids even formed their own companies after making their planes, writing 'Saket jetways', 'Manas Airlines' and the like on these models.
At first, the instructors made them prepare a model that wouldn't fly. A slight change in the design meant that the planes could fly. The best part of this exercise was that after the planes could fly, the kids themselves offered an explanation for this. They also made paper planes and were explained the reasons why it was made the way it is, putting the scientific principles that go into it in perspective.
