17.5 kg of Gold worth Rs 5 Cr Seized at Karipur Airport

Kozhikode: In the biggest-ever gold haul at the Calicut International Airport, Karipur, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday seized 17.5 kg of gold that was hidden inside the baggage meant for a Malappuram native from the cargo of a private airliner. The DRI officials also arrested two men, the passenger and his accomplice.


Valued at around `5 crore in the market, the gold was concealed in a step-up inverter, dumbbells, stapler office type, meat cutting machine, battery, transformer, induction cooker and torch. There were 90 gold biscuits, each weighing 116 gram, and the remaining yellow metal was in the form of cut bars and rods.

The accused, Subair, 28, reached Karipur from Dubai on December 25, 2014 but had sent his baggage as unaccompanied cargo. He had given declaration that the cargo was brought for personal purpose. His accomplice, Rameez, 29, was waiting outside.
