The aviation regulator has pulled up an Air India pilot for turning up late by 60 seconds for a Delhi-Kathmandu flight last month, in what industry experts believe is the first such disciplinary action.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a notice to Captain R Rana, demanding an explanation why he reported to work 44 minutes before the February 26 flight's scheduled departure instead of the prescribed 45 minutes.
DGCA joint director-general Lalit Gupta has said in the show-cause notice that Rana was supposed to check in on time so he could perform safety checks in the cockpit effectively. Rana, who lives in Mumbai, has 15 days to respond, and if he fails to justify the delay, he could be grounded.
Senior Air India pilots said that the DGCA had been overzealous in serving the notice and wondered why Rana had been singled out for disciplinary action when staff of private airlines had escaped penalties for more serious infractions.
