Chandigarh: Paving the way for Chandigarh airport to go international, air force authorities, on Friday, said they are ready to facilitate international flights from the local airport as an interim measure. An official release issued by air force authorities on Friday said, "additional manpower to increase watch hours is being processed.
However, purely as an interim measure, international flights can be facilitated as and when such scheduled flights materialize".
With this, airport authorities can start international flights from the local airport when airlines get permission from the director general civil aviation (DGCA) or AAI. Sunil Dutt, chief executive officer (CEO) of Chandigarh International Airport, said the move would facilitate international airlines willing to launch flights from Chandigarh.
The development assumes significance in view of the fact that Chandigarh airport has been waiting for international flights for a long time. In October, 2012, the ministry of finance (department of revenue) notified the airport as customs airport, which was a mandatory condition to operate international flights. But progress was stalled with the air force, which controls Chandigarh airport, refusing to extend watch hours beyond 8pm.
