Chennai: The Madras high court division bench today directed the Union of India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to file a counter on a petition filed by the Workers Union, who are fighting against the Centre’s decision to privatise the Chennai airport.
The development comes at time when eight private players, including Tata, GMR, GVK and Seimens, had evinced interest in the airport.
R Maheshwari, senior central government standing counsel, who took notice on behalf of the civil aviation ministry said the division bench comprising Justice SK Agnihotri and Justice M Venugopal had directed the Union government (represented by G Rajagopalan Additional Solicitor General of India) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to file a counter in the amendment petition sought by the workers union.
Senior Counsel V Prakash, who represented the workers union, argued while they would not be able to oppose the policy decision of the Centre, the employees wanted their rights to be protected.
