New Delhi: Jammu, Srinagar and Leh airports are among 38 airports nationwide where electronic baggage identification system will be installed soon. A proposal for increasing length of Jammu airport is also being considered by the government of India.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Dr Mahesh Sharma stated this in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. In reply to a question he said an agreement was signed with M/S SITA on 9 April last year in this connection. The company will provide this facility of baggage reconciliation at the airports manned by the Airports Authority of India.
BRS system is being used at Kolkata and Chennai airports by Air India and all foreign airlines, he added.
In reply to another question Dr Sharma said the government has a proposal to increase the length of runway at Jammu airport by 400 meters. At present the runway length is 6700 feet which is suitable for landing and take-off of B737 and A320 category of aircrafts with load penalty under all conditions.
