“Flying coffins” improper word for our aircraft: Parrikar

New Delhi: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said ‘flying coffins’ is not the appropriate word to describe the military aircraft involved in accidents.
“Only in 23 per cent of cases, technical error was found to be the main cause of about 70 accidents which we analysed,”Mr Parrikar said during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha.

He said that in 62 per cent of cases, human error was the reason leading to accidents, while inclement weather and technical defects were the cause for rest of the mishaps.
The number of accidents and the number of causalities are coming down every year, he said, giving details.
“Therefore, flying coffins is not the appropriate word to use….it may sound to be good while describing cases of accidents,” he said, when a member referred to accidents involving MiG fighters as ‘flying coffin’.
