AAI plans awareness campaign on bird hits

Coimbatore: Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to organise a mass awareness campaign in mid-April at residential areas around the Coimbatore International Airport (CIA) to check the menace of bird hits.

The campaign is aimed at avoiding grounding of flights due to bird hits in addition to chasing away birds using bird chasers and zon guns.

Director of the airport D. Paul Manickam told The Hindu that the campaign, involving hundreds of college students, would be jointly organised by airports authority officials, airline operators, district administration, local bodies concerned around the airport, police and NGOs.

Though no bird hits have been reported at CIA in the last three months, airport authorities felt that dumping of garbage still poses a threat to airline operations. Officials also plan to erect awareness banners permanently at residential areas.
