Bigger Boeings may replace Air India pending planes

New Delhi: Air India may replace the yet to be delivered Boeing 787-800 planes for which it had placed an order with a lower number of the bigger Boeing 787-900 aircraft.

The national carrier has already received 20 of the 27 Boeing 787-800 aircraft and delivery of the 21st plane is due in June. "We are in discussions with Boeing.
We will not be paying any extra money for the bigger Boeing 787-900 planes and may induct less than seven planes. All of these are being discussed," said Air India CMD Rohit Nandan.
ET had first reported about AI's move to induct Boeing 787-900s in January this year. Nandan explained that the airline will add same amount of capacity in terms of seats even if it inducts fewer planes.
