Flyers Hop Across to Take App-Taxis at Airport Gate

Chennai: People who fly into Chennai are acclimatising themselves to a short walk after exiting the airport terminal — not just because it’s good for their heart, but also for their wallet. With the prepaid taxi services available inside the airport terminal charging steep prices for drops anywhere in the city, passengers have found that walking to the gate and using app-based services like Ola, Taxi For Sure, Uber and Meru will cost them only half as much. Or less.

Proof that plenty of people are stepping out for rides lies in the fact that a string of baggage trolleys are lined up near the cow-trap at the GST Road entrance. “These days, we make a special trip to get these trolleys from here, otherwise somebody might steal them and we will be held accountable,” grumbled one of the housekeeping staff, listlessly pushing all the trolleys into one linear array. Most passengers standing around are staring intently at their phones and at the oncoming traffic, presumably trying to spot their soon-to-arrive ride.
