Safe sky corridor to link Kolkata, Mumbai

Kolkata: From September 17, Kolkata and Mumbai will be connected by a swanky new highway in the sky that will not only reduce flight time, but also make the journey safer and smoother. The corridors in the sky will also be used by flights to Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.

Called 'city pair' , the highway will have dedicated corridors for west and east-bound traffic to eliminate any chance of collision along the high density route. While city pairs exist on Kolkata-Chennai and Kolkata-Hyderabad sectors, another is in the works for flights between Kolkata and Delhi .

At present, incoming and outgoing flights use only one corridor but in lanes stacked one over the other at a gap of 1,000 ft. Though alternative lanes are used for traffic moving in the opposite direction to ensure there is no head-on collision, there are points of vulnerability when a plane climbs or descends on these high-traffic routes.
