Chandigarh: unjab government on Friday informed the high court that it is the central government that has to take serious steps to launch international flights from Chandigarh international airport.
The state government's statement was given as a reply to a petition filed by Mohali Industries Association over lack of international flights from the airport. "Any decision to operate international flights is to be taken at the level of Union ministry of civil aviation and the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Only they could give the reasons for non-operation of the international airport," submitted the state government in an affidavit.
Hans Raj, Punjab department of civil aviation under secretary, appeared on the state government's behalf for submitting the affidavit. Punjab claimed that it had also written regularly to the Union ministry of civil aviation and ministry of defence to start international flights from Chandigarh. The state government also submitted copies of communications sent by the state to the Centre on March 10, May 28, August 20 and December 10, 2015, requesting it to start international flights from Chandigarh at the time of inauguration of the new terminal of the airport. "We had also resolved operational issues like extension of watch hour and availability of runway related to international airport," said the state government. "To operate international flights from Chandigarh, the state government had made all efforts to expedite the process," it added.
