Bhubaneswar: Biju Patnaik International Airport authorities plan to approach various airlines to turn the city airport into their base for operations as they frequently divert aircraft to this airport due to fog at Kolkata and Delhi airports.
On an average, one flight is diverted to this airport during winter. With visibility less than 50 metre at airports in Kolkata and Delhi, flights get diverted mid-air to the airport here. This season, five flights had to make emergency landings here because of fog.
The Bhubaneswar airport, even on most chilly days, does not experience fog. "If the airlines agree to our proposal, we will provide free night parking here. All other airports charge for night parking," said airport director Sharad Kumar.
Kumar has proposed that the airlines will land in Bhubaneswar and return to the source destination in the morning taking passengers from here. "When there is no fog at the Kolkata airport, the flight will land there and come to Bhubaneswar for night stay. In the morning, Kolkata-bound passengers here can take the return flight," said Kumar. "If this idea materializes, we will have more passengers and flights," he said.
