DGCA turns down airline's request for inflight Holi celebrations

New Delhi: It is going to be a dry Holi in Indian skies this year. The aviation regulator has turned down a leading desi airline's request to let its cabin crew have a "cultural program" -- read sing and dance -- on some flights on the festival of colours that is on March 24.

The airline sought permission from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as the regulator had recently suspended five airhostesses of Jet Airways who had allowed Bollywood playback Sonu Nigam to sing on a chartered flight's public announcement system. Two years back, the DGCA had served show cause to SpiceJet as its crew had danced to balam pichkari on Holi.
Not willing to take any chance with the regulator, the airline tried to take its nod before performing any song or dance on its flights this Holi. "We have turned down their request. We have a zero tolerance to anything that could affect safety. We have told the airline that it can have its celebrations at the airport before boarding flyers," a senior DGCA official said.
