Demand soars for more international, domestic flights

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam, which has the only international airport in residuary Andhra Pradesh, is seeking more international and domestic flights to cater the needs of the North Andhra region and also parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The Andhra Pradesh Air Travellers Association feels there is a need for the development of the Vizag airport by providing necessary amenities to passengers as the city has a huge potential for development of industries, tourism and other business investments.

Various airliners have been operating more than 32 flights daily, including three international flights to Dubai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from the Port City, which has night landing facility. "The city needs more domestic flights. Air travellers need a flight to Chennai in the morning and Kolkata in the evening to facilitate international air connectivity. Likewise, we need direct connectivity to Colombo and Bangkok and in the absence of it, most air travellers from this region depend either on Chennai or Kolkata airports to fly out," said DVS Varma, a senior member of the AP Air Travellers Association.
At present, Air India operates a Vizag-Hyderabad-Dubai daily flight. "Instead of running the Air India flight from Vizag-Hyderabad-Dubai, the government can convert it to Vijayawada-Vizag-Dubai. This would then connect the new capital region and other parts of the state. We have many flights for Hyderabad from here already," AP Air Travellers Association vice-president O Naresh Kumar said.
