Visakhapatnam: Air passengers are unhappy over non-availability of a direct flight between Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.
At present, a one-stop daily flight connects Vizag and Kolkata with a halt in Bhubaneswar. The flight takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Passengers rue that high priced tickets between the two cities is one of reasons for people to prefer trains. The port city has a number of Bengalis, who have made Vizag their second home.
"As per Directorate-General of Civil Aviation summer schedule, there is proposal for a direct flight to Kolkata. Don't know why it is not materialising," observed airline enthusiast Gunadeep Narendrapuram. The number of passengers flying between Vizag and Kolkata is higher than the number of passengers flying between Vizag and Bhubaneswar.
"There are no flights in the evening or throughout the day. So we have to wait till the next day to travel. This become a difficulty during emergencies," said P Banerjee, who works at a corporate house in Vizag while his family is in Kolkata.
