Dharamshala: Air services linking Dharamshala, Shimla, Kullu and Chandigarh have failed miserably as not even a single flight took off from here since its inauguration. The airport director, Parwinder Tiwari told TOI on Thursday that financial viabilities have hampered the airports' operations, and the company has been in talks with government to subsidize air fares. "It is hoped that the services will resume till September if the proposal to encourage the air connectivity in Himachal region is approved," he added.
Sources told nine seater aircraft was costing Rs 60,000 per day to the company which made the operations priced exorbitantly high. If state government extends support, the aircraft could be replaced with a 19 seater plane.
Air India and Spice jet airlines operate total three flights daily from Delhi to Kangra, which is the only airport in HP with routine flights. The airport authorities here need 123 acres more of land from state to bring the air fares down and make it profitable.
At present, air fare for Delhi is ranging between Rs 3,500 to 15,000 per passenger, which can be lowered if government grants land to civil aviation department. Due to short runway, 1,372 metres in lenght and 30 metres in width, only small aircrafts run from here.
