'Just two flights in a city of 50 lakh shocking'

Surat: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials expressed shock at the poor air connectivity in Surat.
"It is shocking that the city of 50 lakh population has only two flights per day," said AAI's regional executive director, K Hemlata who was in the city on Tuesday to discuss the airport issues with the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). and joint general manager Rajiv Mehta were in the city.

The SGCCI's aviation committee had invited the travel agents and representatives of two private airlines including Vistara and Jet Airways for discussing the air connectivity issues.
"The AAI has taken up the expansion of runway from 2,250 m to 2,905 m and the work is going on a full swing. After the expansion, Surat will be able to cater to wide-bodied aircrafts. We are hoping that the expansion will be completed before January 2017," she said. She was accompanied by AAI joint general manager Rajiv Mehta.
