Chandigarh: Clouds of uncertainty over the commencement of the much-awaited long-haul flights from the Chandigarh international airport have started scattering.
People, particularly businessmen and NRIs, of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are already full of enthusiasm after the announcement by Air India that its maiden Chandigarh-Sharjah flight will take off on September 15 ahead of Indigo’s Chandigarh-Dubai flight on September 26. Though the new terminal building of the airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 11 last year, clouds of uncertainty kept hovering over the commencement of international flights.
The authorities had initially promised that international flights would start in August, but later it was announced that flights to Dubai would start in September.
The Mohali Industries Association had filed a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana High Court over non-operation of international flights from the Rs 1,400-crore "jumbo airport".
The authorities are now planning to start what, they claim, will be "long-haul" flights to the UK. At present, there are no plans to start flights to long-distance international destinations such as New York and Toronto.
