Air traffic to Srinagar Airport has come down by about 50 percent with only 40 in and out flights presently operating daily instead of 76 in the beginning of July, due to major drop in tourist footfall after the killing of Hizbul Mujahadeen Commander Burhan Wani on July 8 resulting in continuous restrictions and shutdowns.
However, the authorities believe that the number of daily flights may further go down as the airline companies operating from the Srinagar Airport have intimated Director General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA) that they are going to cut further the number of daily trips given there is not much passenger flow.
“At present these airlines have submitted the winter schedule announcing with just a 50 percent reduction in flights. But incase number of passengers drastically reduce then they might further bring down number of flights. That will leave us with just a handful of flights in the months to come,” Director Airports Authority of India, Srinagar, Sharad Kumar told Greater Kashmir.
He said the winter schedule will be effective from end of October.
Many private airlines with whom Greater Kashmir spoke to have either cut down on number of daily flights or else have shelved their expansion plans with regard to connecting Srinagar with other cities.
Low-cost carrier SpiceJet which had discontinued its Chandigarh-Srinagar flight as a result of the unrest has also reduced number of flights from Delhi to Srinagar.
