Domestic airlines to operate 21 per cent more flights this winter

New Delhi: Keeping up with strong domestic passenger growth in the aviation sector, domestic carriers have increased their weekly flights by 21 per cent under this winter schedule, effective from October 30, compared with the corresponding winter schedule a year ago. Domestic carriers will operate 16,600 flights per week this winter schedule as against 13,744 flights operated in the corresponding period last year. The winter schedule for the Indian airlines will start from October 30 this year and go on to the last week of March 2017.
However, the number of airports available for scheduled operations in the winter schedule 2016 has come down to 75, from 81 airports in the year-ago period.
“Scheduled operations will be available from 75 airports in the present winter schedule. Services from Mysore, Porbandar, Nanded, Durgapur and Pondicherry airports have been withdrawn, while services from Bhavnagar airport has been restored,” a DGCA official said.
Most domestic airlines have increased the number of weekly flights in the present winter schedule, with low-cost carrier Indigo increasing its weekly flights to 6,276 from 4,411 y-o-y, while SpiceJet and GoAir have increased their weekly flights to 2,088 from 1,829 and 1,209 from 964, respectively, compared with the corresponding period a year ago.
