India considers in-flight Wi-Fi

The Economic Times reported India’s Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha, as saying that the authorities are examining a proposal for the introduction of Wi-Fi services. But any decision is likely to depend of the resolution of perceived security threats.

“The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is studying the matter to make sure that all considerations are adequately addressed, and as soon as that is done we will issue a statement,” the minister was quoted saying, adding that authorities “don’t have a timeline” for the project.

At present, Wi-Fi services and phone calls are not permitted on flights in Indian airspace for security reasons. This means that many international airlines have to switch off their Wi-Fi service when flying across the country.
