India rejects flight emission norms

A day after reaching an important milestone to bring the Paris Agreement on climate change into force from next month, the UN civil aviation agency arrived at a deal on Thursday to control carbon emissions from international flights.
India, however, objected to the emission cap for its airlines and refused to be part of it at this juncture keeping in view the growth of its aviation sector.
"Our stand has been clear: that the rich countries should cut emissions on priority as they have been big polluters in the past.
The offset programme proposed in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) deal puts pressure on our airlines at a time when they are trying to grow," said an aviation ministry official.
The aviation deal, reached at the 39th Assembly of the ICAO in Montreal, is meant for a new global market-based measure to offset CO2 emissions from international flights. The ICAO wanted to arrive at such a deal because international flights, which account for 60% of aviation, were not covered under the Paris deal. International aviation at present represents 2% of global carbon emissions.
