Airports authority of India officer raises safety concerns at city airports

Following news that a safety audit will soon be undertaken by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) officer has raised serious concerns about the operations and passenger safety at Mumbai airport and Juhu aerodrome.

S Mangala, deputy general manager of air safety at AAI, sent her report 'The Report of Air Safety in the Western Region,' dated October 18, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju.
Mangala, who was based in Mumbai, was transferred to Kolkata in September this year but has challenged this decision.

The report comes ahead of a visit by the ICAO -the international body that governs civil aviation norms worldwide -to India in March next year to assess concerns over the country's poor air safety record. It notes that the encroachment of airspace by the buildings around the airports is a cancer spreading across Indian airports, but it has reached alarming limits in Mumbai.
