The Gujarat government wants three greenfield airports at Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. The formal proposal for the greenfield airport at Rajkot has already been sent to the ministry of civil aviation and Airport Authority of India (AAI). AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra has confirmed the development.
When contacted, Mohapatra said, "We have received the proposal for a greenfield airport near Rajkot from the state government."
"We are preparing a feasibility report for Rajkot," said Mohapatra, adding, "We are currently expanding existent airports at Vadodara and Surat, and have not yet received any formal proposal from the state with regard to greenfield airports in these two cities." "However, if the state government submits proposals for those cities, we will consider them on merit," said Mohapatra.
An officer from the state government, who is close to the development, said, "The Rajkot collector has already identified around 40 acres of land, 20 km outside the city , on way to Ahmedabad. The estimated project cost is around Rs 700 crore."
