Mumbai: Flying club to start India's first aero sports academy

The Bombay Flying Club will soon open a centre to train the stout-hearted skydiving, power gliding, hot air ballooning, and other popular activities. The National Aero Sports Academy will be the country's first such institution and it will come up at Dhule airport, around 330 km from Mumbai.
The flying club, based in Juhu Aerodrome, already conducts some of its training operations in Dhule as Mumbai's airspace is too crowded. Recently, club president Captain Mihir Bhagvati discussed the plans for the academy with state tourism minister Jaykumar Rawal, who assured support from Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation.

"We have an airport in Dhule and its lease is already with the Bombay Flying Club.
We are working with them to start the training for aero sports. Dhule can become a training hub and a tourist destination," Rawal said. Dhule, in northwestern Maharashtra, is the minister's hometown.

Flying and adventure-sports enthusiasts say though activities such as skydiving and parasailing have become quite popular, there aren't many major training centres in the country.

"We are getting equipment from Aero Club of India and have also urged some of our members to invest," Bhagvati said. "The National Aero Sports Academy, or ASA, will be the first such institution in the country. We will train students and participants here for national and international aero sports events. We will also host such events."
