Air India steps up security procedure for US-bound flyers

New Delhi: Following the American Department of Homeland Security directive to airlines flying to the US, Air India has also started asking passengers questions like the purpose of their trips and about their check-in bags. Starting Thursday, US asked all airlines flying to the country almost 2,100 daily flights from overseas to pose these questions to flyers as an additional security measure.
"We were already doing so by strict checking of passport and visas at check-in counters and also asking (some) passengers about the purpose of their visit and baggage content. We have a pre-boarding security check for passengers on US flights. However, as and when there is a new directive from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), we comply with the same and are in compliance for the latest one too," an AI spokesperson said.

Air India is the only Indian carrier that flies to the US, both nonstop and one-stop via Europe. AI and United are the only two airlines that fly nonstop between India and US. Airlines like Gulf carriers Emirates, Etihad, Etihad; European ones like Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France-KLM and southeast Asian carriers like those from China, Singapore Airlines and Korean carry the bulk of travel between India and North America.
